Monkeys Used in Medicine and Experiments

According to evolutionist Charles Darwin, monkeys and humans have a common ancestor they evolved from. This is perhaps one of the reasons monkeys and humans have so many things in common, from the look to certain aspects of their behaviour. Scientists have studied the behaviour of monkeys, especially in chimpanzees and gorillas and have came to the conclusion that they share more than 98 percent of the human genetic code. They are highly intelligent and social beings who have their own language and their distinct cultures. This particular species of monkeys use tools, teach their young, plan for the future and make moral choices.

Monkeys held in captivity have been taught American Sign Language and their proficiency shows that they can understand and use abstract symbols in their communication. Researchers have also proven that the line that separates monkeys from humans and from the rest of the kingdom has been arbitrarily drawn. Researchers and doctors have also used monkeys in developing communication skills in children. It is a proven fact that chimpanzees can pass on these acquired skills onto their children.

Unfortunately, there are many monkeys that have been used for all kinds of experiments. There are many organisations and associations that struggle to put an end to these experiments. Chimpanzees are used today predominantly in infectious disease experiments, most commonly hepatitis and AIDS. Once infected with the virus, these monkeys often remain isolated from other chimpanzees and confined indoors for life.

Today, there are many projects that support freeing monkeys held in captivity or using them in medical assistance. Some organisations, train capuchin monkeys as monkey helpers to assist quadriplegics and other people with severe spinal chord injuries or mobility impairments. After being socialised in a human home as infants, monkeys undergo extensive training before being placed with a quadriplegic. Around the house, monkeys are trained to perform daily tasks such as heating the food in the microwaves, washing the face of the patient and opening drink bottles. Be that as it may, monkeys are animals and should live in their own natural habitat.

Monkeys and Mythology

It is a known fact that animals have always played an important part in the mythology of different cultures. And monkeys make no exception. Monkeys are regarded differently by the cultures of the world, but they exist in most mythologies. Believe it or not, monkeys had an important role in the mythology of some nations, such as India, Ancient Egypt, or Polynesia, where they are deified. The Buddhism religion is very well known for the symbol of the three senseless monkeys, who cannot hear, cannot speak, and cannot see. This legend is known worldwide.

Also known as the three wise monkeys or the three mystic apes, this legend is a pictorial maxim. One of the monkeys is Mizaru and he is portrayed with his hands covering his eyes. The second monkey is Kikazuru, the one covering his ears. The other one is Iwazuru, the one covering his mouth. It is said that these monkeys are the embodiment of the famous proverb “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”. In some versions of the story, a fourth monkey is present, named Shizaru, symbolizing the principle “do no evil”, by crossing his arms. The meaning of the three monkeys can differ from culture to culture, as there have been numerous variations and interpretations to this story. However, the Japanese culture is the most fond of the three monkeys story, since the Japanese people actually worship them.

Buddhism also regards the monkey as an early incarnation of Buddha. On the other side, the same Buddhist religion may depict monkeys as being tricky, ugly and deceiving. There is also a Chinese Buddhist metaphor, “mind monkey”, which applies to those people who are restless and unsettled. In the ancient Peru culture, the Moche people were very fond of animals, as they were true nature worshipers. This is why monkeys were often depicted in their artworks. In the Roman an ancient Greek mythology, monkeys were always accompanying the god of fire, Hephaestus (also known as Vulcanus). The Mayans from Guatemala and Mexico also worshiped a howler monkey god, depicted as patron of the arts.

Monkeys Are Endangered

[Facebook] [Twitter]

Monkeys are mammals, very similar to humans, evolution theories saying that humans evolved from these animals. Monkeys live in groups, this way they are stronger and able to fight against their enemies. These cute and intelligent animals were endangered and still are, as they are used in laboratories for tests and experiments, but the worst part is that many of them die after that. It is true that this meant important discoveries for us, but what about these creatures? Monkeys are also used at circus where they are trained and participate in shows where people come to watch these creatures doing a lot of funny things. Although monkeys are adored by so many people, perhaps the cutest are monkeys babies, which are so nice and funny. Both adults and children love them.

The sad part is that there are not so many monkeys in the wild, and also few in captivity, at the zoo. It is an opportunity for us to see them, but it would be better if we could do something to know they are safe and we are not destroying their habitat anymore. This happens very often as we deforest large areas to built factories, roads or even houses. The consequences are devastating for monkeys as they do not have any food, no shelter to hide from enemies and to raise their babies. The same thing happens with many other animals, so perhaps teaching our children to protect animals and to fight against irrational deforesting, we will not be the last ones to watch monkeys in the zoo.

There are many countries where monkeys  are confronted with such problems, but these countries are too poor to solve that, so it is required the help of stronger and richer countries, on a global level, to ensure that these wonderful creatures are safe and will not be another extinct animal species. If monkeys problem will be solved, we will have the great chance to admire them many years from now on. The difference will be that they will be more in the wild than in the zoos.

Monkeys are really interesting and extremely intelligent, which is probably why they have been featured in so many films over the years. Regardless of the species, these animals of all kinds, shapes, sizes and ages, have had a major impact in the development of film making revolving around animal kinds. The monkeys that appeared in entertainment so far, have been made famous by the films they were in, music videos, famous owners or as fictional characters.

One of the famous monkeys in the entertainment business was Bubbles, Michael Jackson’s chimp, who lived on the Neverland Ranch. Bubbles always appeared in images dressed, as all stereotypes picture monkeys, in a diaper. The weird thing about this particular one was that it was performing house duties and chores. Another example of one of the most famous monkeys of all times, is the fictional character called Curious George. This animated monkey appeared for the first time in 1941, in the cartoons designed by Hans Augusto Rey and Margaret Ray. Curious George made a great impact in the formation of the children of those times, constructing an image that showed monkeys, not only as a curious species, but also as an intuitive and intelligent one. In cinematographic productions, one of the most well-known monkeys of our times is Jack, the little pirate monkey from Pirates of the Caribbean. It has created a huge image around small species of monkeys and their use in films as a character to be watched and kept in mind. Jack appeared as the pet animal of captain Hector Barbossa, played by Geoffrey Rush, named this way in order to mock captain Jack Sparrow, the character played by Johnny Depp.

The Relationship of Monkeys and Humans

[Facebook] [Twitter]

Monkeys are some of the most popular animals in the world, and they got to be very beloved due to their amazing intelligence. This is why monkeys and humans developed many relationships, some of which are very nice, others not so great. Monkeys are very worshipped by some people, especially in the Hindu religion. Then, many people grew fond of monkeys due to the numerous circus performances they were involved in throughout the years, so it is clear that when it comes to the entertainment industry, monkeys make true stars. The incredible intelligence and learning capabilities of monkeys drove people to believe that they make great pets, too.

The truth is that some monkeys actually do, but they would rather not be in captivity. Some of the greatest features that monkeys have is that, if properly trained, they can be used as service animals for the disabled persons. As monkeys are very smart, they have been trained by some organizations to assist the disabled people, like the paraplegic, providing them with things that they need but cannot reach. Then, many researchers use monkeys for experiments, as they are the animals that resemble the most to the humans. Unfortunately, many of them end up losing their lives. While the use of monkeys in laboratories is controversial, we must admit that many experiments conducted on monkeys led to significant discoveries for the human kind.

Monkeys have also been used in space exploration programmers, by many countries. There are, though, cases when the relationship of humans and monkeys is not so fortunate. This happens when monkeys are considered as pests, because they can cause extensive damage in the agricultural industry. In some areas, they are killed in monkeys drives, which is a major issue regarding the conservation of endangered species. No matter this case, monkeys are extremely cute, and they can be seen in mostly every zoo in the world. They have developed a nice relationship with their caregivers, which means that monkeys can also be loving and thankful.

Monkeys are very smart and in conclusion they can be trained and they do a lot of interesting and also funny things. You can see them at the zoo, but also they are present at the circus. It is interesting that there is a type of monkey that is as small as the thumb that you could lose it in your palm. Monkeys are found in America, Africa, Asia and there are several species with different sizes. Many experiments have been made on monkeys and they are often hunted or captured in order to be sold as pets or to different circus, so their life is often in danger.

Sea monkeys, arctic monkeys, flying monkeys are all interesting species and some of them are still studied more and more. Scientists say that we evolved from monkeys and even though you believe it or not, one thing is very clear: we resemble a lot with them. It is also very interesting that monkeys communicate very well  and they take care very well of each other. Monkeys live in communities and they feed with leaves, with insects, bananas and they are  fast .

Many hypothesis are related to the fact that humans evolved from monkeys and what is great about them is that they are able to learn new things easily and in a short period of time. In the zoos you will have a great time when you will see monkeys. Baby monkeys are also very beautiful and loved especially by kids. Monkeys had several meanings, symbols and they appeared in movies. Scientists still study them and try to find as many as possible things as there can be, hoping that this way, we will find something also about our evolution and development in time. In case you want a monkey as a pet, then you must know that you will have to ensure the necessary space and other conditions that are very important.

Monkeys Can Be Great Pets

[Facebook] [Twitter]

When you want to get yourself a pet, you will need to make an important choice because of the many options available for you. Many people love having dogs, cats or maybe hamsters, but some just like more impressive animals such as snakes or maybe lions. While snakes can not be hugged and lions can not be kept for a long period of time because they are an idea of a pet only when they are babies, monkeys are the best choice when you want a pet that will make you stand apart and that will not represent any type of danger for you or your family.

Monkeys may be difficult to take care of, but they are surely going to make you love them. Monkeys are extremely smart, but the truth is that you will not be able to have one in a small apartment, even if the animal you want to have will be a small sized one. Well, we have all seen many movies in which monkeys are the best friends of small children, taking care of them and becoming very protective, being smart and adaptable to every environment, but the reality might be a little more different. Although monkeys are some of the most friendly animals you are ever going to be in contact with, taking care of one can turn out to be more difficult than you may first imagine.

Monkeys are going to need for a series of conditions to be accomplished with the purpose to stay healthy. They are going to constantly need adapted food and fresh water, but monkeys are also going to need fresh air. If you do not properly take care of the animal you have when talking about monkeys, you have to know that they can develop a series of diseases and that they can be harmed both physically and mentally. And a very important thing you should keep in mind when you want to have a monkey as a pet is that the animal will need to be trained, at least when it comes to some basic aspects. If you will be able to make a dog or even a cat listen to you without special trainings, with monkeys is going to be much harder to accomplish that purpose, but you should know that impossible is nothing. So, if you really want a monkey as a pet, there is no reason why you should not have one.

Monkey Abuse in 2011

[Facebook] [Twitter]

For any animal lover, the idea of ever harming a monkey is unthinkable. Sadly, not everyone on the globe feels that way. Although it seems truly barbaric, there are still people in the world who are willing to harm these wonderful animals. The first place where these animals are being abused in 2011 is in Thailand. If you only heard an overview of people talking about what was going on with monkeys in Thailand, it might not sound that bad at first. That’s because the overview of what’s happening is that adorable monkeys are playing instruments to entertain tourists. However, the reason this is far from being something cute is because these monkeys are actually chained up as they are playing these instruments. Unfortunately, that’s not where the abuse stops. Because these monkeys are forced to perform for so long, they are physically weak. And to top off the shameful abuse, when the monkeys don’t perform a trick because they are simply exhausted, they are hit with stones until they resume performing.

Another place where reports of monkey abuse have surfaced is in Indonesia. The reports coming from this area are quite similar to those in Indonesia. What was truly heartbreaking about one of these reports is that not only was the monkey forced to perform by the side of the road while being chained up, but the monkey being forced to do this was actually a mother who was trying to nurse its baby. Additionally, people investigating these reports have discovered that the abusers who exploit these monkeys for money push them so hard during training that they sometimes end up killing them.

Thumb Monkeys – Are They Real?

[Facebook] [Twitter]

Most people have seen pictures of thumb monkeys on the Internet. In the event that you haven’t seen a picture of these adorable creatures, they are monkeys that are so small that they fit on the thumb of a human. As depicted in different pictures, these tiny animals are able to crawl from one finger to another on a human’s hand.

When people see one or more of these pictures, their initial reaction usually involves oohing and aahing over the cuteness of these creatures. However, after they have a minute to absorb the cuteness of these animals, their next question is whether or not these animals are real. Because it’s so easy to doctor pictures that are on the Internet, it’s easy to be skeptical about something that you’ve never seen in person. However, while many of the images that appear online are simply the product of clever Photoshopping, these creatures do actually exist.

The actual name for thumb monkeys is dwarf monkeys. These creatures are also known as pygmy marmosets. They are officially the smallest true monkeys in the entire world. To give you an idea of how small these monkeys are, they weigh less than half an ounce. As a comparison, five quarters weigh one ounce. That means that one of these monkeys weighs just a little more than two quarters.

Although these monkeys are incredibly small, they typically live long lives. When they live in captivity, it’s common for them to enjoy a life-span of over two decades.
